En 1928. Estudia en la Escuela Nacional de las Artes Plásticas de la UNAM y en París escultura con Ossip Zadkine.

En 1954 es becado por el Gobierno Francés.

Multidisciplinario, domina tanto la pintura como la escultura, en las que sobresale como autor de auténtica originalidad vanguardista.

Entre otras distinciones, es nombrado Miembro de Número de la Academia de Artes de México en 1973.

En 1975 recibe el Gran Premio de Honor de la XIII Bienal de Sao Paulo, Brasil. También en 1987 es nombrado Ciudadano Ilustre de Zacatecas por Decreto del Congreso del Estado.

En 1988 recibe el Premio Nacional de Artes.

En 1993 es designado Creador Emérito por Decreto Presidencial.

En 1998 abre sus puertas el Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez en la ciudad de Zacatecas.
